The Benefits of Volunteering
You can make a difference in the life of a child by doing community service as a Marin County volunteer tutor
We Need Tutors For Our 1st - 8th grade After School Extended Learning Day Program at Our NEW Marin City College Prep Center
We are committed, through our After School and Evening Programs, to closing the achievement gap for Marin City students so that 100% of them graduate High School and complete College. We need strong volunteer tutors to help serve these students.
We are looking for two groups of volunteers – one for our 1st-3rd graders and one for our 4th-8th graders.
The ideal commitment is one afternoon /week for the school year. This provides the teachers, tutors and students with some continuity and time to get to know each other and develop relationships. But we are flexible and really focused on recruiting as many hands as possible to keep our momentum going. Our goal is 10 regular volunteers per day. We observe school holidays and breaks.
1st-3rd grade volunteers work with our two credentialed teachers, Ms. D. and Mrs. Doherty. We have a great group of 1st-3rd graders – very sweet girls and boys with a lot of energy. The first day can be a little overwhelming but once you are “in the groove “ it’s fun and satisfying. Each student needs a certain amount of individual attention each day in reading and vocabulary comprehension and fluency, writing skills and math fundamentals. Primary assignments include:
- Work with one or two students on homework packets and learning activities
- Help with choice time play activities
- Read with one or two students in our reading corner
- Help with snack time and success circle
Please contact volunteers@btgcollegeprep.org for more information.
4th-8th grade volunteers work with our credentialed teachers, Ms. O and Ms Alexandra. We have 4th through 8th graders with a broad range of needs. They also really benefit from one on one attention. We are focusing on homework support and completion, but also have other activities including journaling, topical discussions, reading, and games when they are through with their homework. We will also have projects and book circles as we have the volunteers to guide these activities.
Our volunteers will:
- Provide one on one homework support in math, science and language arts
- Provide mentoring and act as a role models
- Help students see the connection between success in school and success in life
- Participate in success circles at the end of the day
We meet every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00-5:30 at our NEW Marin City College Prep Center at 105 Drake Avenue, Marin City, CA 94965.
Please contact volunteers@btgcollegeprep.org for more information.
We Need Tutors For Our Evening One-on-One Tutoring Program

We ask for a weekly commitment for the school year.
We provide one on one tutoring, working with Marin City youth in grades K-12. Our students and tutors are matched and stay together for the year. This allows them to get to know each other, and for the tutor to be more effective in helping their student. Two credentialed teachers advocate, circulate and support the tutor/student pairs. Our Student Advocate works with the schools to monitor student performance and needs, and shares that information with the tutors and teachers.
- The tutor commitment is twofold: being there for the student every week, nurturing them and developing a relationship with them. The other is supporting them in school, helping them with their homework , strengthening their math, reading and writing skills.
- We tutor every Monday and Tuesday from 6:30-7:30, at our Marin City College Prep Center at 105 Drake Avenue, Marin City, CA 94965.
- The best way to get a sense for the evening program is to come visit us and see us in action.
Please contact volunteers@btgcollegeprep.org for more information.
Our volunteer/outreach coordinator works hard to ensure that all of our energetic students are paired with caring adult volunteers or high school student volunteers, in tutoring relationships. The benefits of volunteering in our program can be seen in the growth of each child’s self-esteem and increased interest in their schoolwork. Other Volunteers Needed
Alum Mentor Support- We have students in college who could use the support of a mentor as they navigate the often challenging and yet exciting transition to college. Our alums face the same daunting new life in college and their ability to sustain continued growth requires the support of a mentor and “guardian angel” much like their peers in more affluent and fortunate homes. The time commitment for being a mentor to an alum is checking in with your student at least once a month and/or as needed, be an advisor and advocate for your student during their college years. The most gratifying reward would be a life long relationship with your student! Please contact volunteers@btgcollegeprep.org for more information.
